Officer Scott Smith Named
March Employee of the Month

On Thursday, April 10, 2003 , Officer Smith was assigned to Longfellow Sports Club at 203 Oak Street to take a report of a stolen wallet from the locker room.  Officer Smith learned that two witnesses had observed a person leaving the sports club carrying a pair of blue jeans in his hands. Further investigation revealed a third witness who identified the suspect. The suspect had been observed looking into lockers earlier in the evening.  After learning the suspect’s name and address, Smith continued his relentless efforts and went to the home of the suspect. Here he had conversation with both the suspect and his parents, and obtained permission to search the suspect’s car.

During the search, Officer Smith discovered the stolen items in the suspect’s car. While conducting his search, Officer Smith discovered evidence of five other reported larcenies from the locker room, dating back as far as January of 2003. After more conversation with the suspect and the suspect’s parents, Officer Smith then continued his investigation by contacting the owners of the recovered properties and these items were identified by the victims.  Officer Smith displayed a strong determination to solve these thefts from the Longfellow Sports Club, which later led to the suspect admitting to stealing ten wallets while he was a member of the club.  The Longfellow Sports Club has experienced an extensive history of larcenies from their locker room without any leads. Since Officer Smith successfully investigated these complaints the thefts have ceased.

Officer Smith is further recognized for his tireless and lengthy investigation of a suspicious person complaint on Coachman Lane, which subsequently led to charges being filed, putting many residents at ease.

For his dedication and excellence in police duty, Officer Scott Smith is hereby commended and named Employee of the Month for May 2003.
