Officer Ronald Richardson Named
September Employee of the Month

On August 19, 2002 at approximately 1450 hrs Dispatcher Turner initiated a radio broadcast to all units advising that an armed home invasion had just occurred in Wellesley , and that two white male suspects wearing dark t-shirts were observed fleeing the area toward Rt. 9 in a black Ford Contour, registration unknown. A silver handgun was shown.

Upon receiving this information Officer Richardson, assigned to Area A, took a position at the intersection of Worcester and North Main Streets.  Shortly thereafter he observed a black Ford Contour traveling west on Rt. 9 in the left-hand lane. Officer Richardson followed this vehicle to Speen Street and was able to pull abreast of the vehicle and observe two white male subjects in the rear seat wearing dark colored t-shirts. At this time having reasonable suspicion, he initiated the traffic stop in front of Home Depot in Natick . The suspect vehicle continued into Framingham without stopping, finally pulling into the Exxon station at the intersection of Speen & RTE 30.

Having received information that the suspects may be armed, Officer Richardson maintained control of the suspects while awaiting the arrival of support officers.

Officer Amy Coughlin was the first arriving backup officer. During this period Dispatcher Turner had provided further information relative to the suspects. One suspect was wearing a dark T-shirt with the word “slipknot” embossed across the front of the shirt. Officer Richardson observed the suspect seated in the left rear seat of the vehicle was wearing a dark colored T-shirt with the word “slipknot” on it. At this point Officer Richardson began to remove the suspects one at a time from the vehicle. After the suspect in the left rear seat was removed, a firearm was observed positioned between the two rear seat occupants, hidden from the officers’ view.  This weapon was later determined to be an air pellet replica.

After all four suspects were removed from the vehicle and handcuffed for the officers’ safety, Wellesley PD Deputy Chief Brooks and Sgt. Peter Nehass arrived at the scene with the victims of the armed house invasion. The victims positively identified the suspects as the individuals who committed the armed invasion. They were then turned over to Wellesley P.D.

The successful conclusion to this investigation was facilitated by the detailed description and related details given by Dispatcher Turner and the through the assistance of Officer Coughlin in securing the suspects while awaiting arrival of the Wellesley Police Department investigators.

For his alertness and professional response to this incident, Officer Ronald Richardson is hereby commended and named Employee of the Month for September 2002.  His actions reflect credit on himself and the Natick Police Department.
