Det. Rick Halloran Named
December Employee of the Month

At 2227 hours, on October 27, 2002, two teenage female employees of Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream were preparing to secure the business for the night when they heard someone knocking on the back door. They opened the door and encountered two men wearing hooded sweatshirts, ski masks, and each brandishing a handgun. The pair burst into the building and placed a gun in the neck of one of the females while the other had a gun stuck in her face. While on the floor they were ordered to open the safe and at one point, one of the females was dragged by her hair into the back room.

Traumatized by the experience, the females were hysterical when responding Officers Brian Ingham, Edward Arena, Kevin Delehanty and Detective Richard Halloran Jr. arrived. After the responding officers were able to assuage the females' concerns, Detective Halloran began to gather information, dust for fingerprints, and retrieve a video of the robbery.

Using information obtained from the two female employees and from a witness located by Officer Arena, Detective Halloran was able to determine the identities of the suspects. He contacted and coordinated with both the Framingham and Greenfield Police Departments in numerous attempts to locate the suspects before he was finally able to interview one of the suspects on Monday, October 28, 2002. The 19 year old suspect came to police headquarters with his father who insisted he be present for the interview and shut off the interview when it got to the accusatory stage.

Confident in the progression and validity of his investigation, between October 28, 2002 and November 7, 2002 Detective Halloran, assisted by Detective Haswell, doggedly pursued the second suspect in the robbery eventually convincing him to admit his involvement. The accumulated information from Detective Halloran's persistent and thorough investigation led to an arrest warrant being issued for and the eventual surrender of the first suspect.

The success of this investigation is in part attributable to the efforts of a number of NPD officers, but had it not been for Detective Halloran's persistence and investigative experience, this case may well have remained unsolved.

For his excellence in police duty, Detective Richard Halloran is hereby commended and named Employee of the Month for December 2002.
