Ofc. Ed Arena
Named November
Employee of the Month

On Sunday, October 13, 2002, while on patrol on Route 9 near the intersection of Oak Street, Officer Edward Arena noticed a group of youths walking east on the westbound side of Route 9. Simultaneously he noticed that the sign at Maria's Restaurant appeared damaged. Turning into the parking area at Maria's Restaurant, Officer Arena attempted to speak to the group by calling out to them. They then ran northerly on Oak Street. Officer Arena requested assistance and was able to stop the group in the vicinity of 99 Oak Street. One of the youths wore a large, black hooded sweatshirt with a pouch pocket in front. There was a large bulge in the pouch pocket which when patted down revealed a can of black spray paint.

Area officers immediately began making observations of local businesses finding fresh evidence of "tagging" on walls and dumpsters in the area. The juveniles were transported to the station where their parents were called, appeared, and statements and admissions were taken from the suspects. Complaints have been sought for the criminal offense of "tagging."

Officer Arena's alertness and perseverance in the investigation of this common, but often unsolved crime reflect credit on him and the Natick Police Department. Officer Arena is hereby commended and named Employee of the Month for November, 2002.
