Citation to Accompany the Award

For his consistent excellence in police duty throughout the year, Officer Jason D. Sutherland is hereby named the Natick Police Department Officer of the Year.

In 2006, Officer Sutherland was twice named the department’s Employee of the Month. In the first instance, while conducting a felony motor vehicle stop, Officer Sutherland was able to successfully diffuse a potential “suicide by cop” situation involving an obviously disturbed man.  His calm demeanor and careful observation of the details of the individual’s behavior resulted in a peaceful resolution to a potentially deadly encounter. Officer Sutherland was named Employee of the Month a second time for his tenacity and investigative skill which led to the identification of one suspect and apprehension of another in a series of criminal occurrences in town.

Officer Sutherland is a certified Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) instructor, recently joined the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council’s Regional Response Team (METLEC RRT), and has participated in the department’s efforts to reduce outstanding warrants.  Officer Sutherland’s respect for the department and the uniform he wears is apparent through his regular presence at department-related services and participation during Peace Officers Memorial Day activities.

Officer Sutherland creatively develops solutions for situations he encounters, and through his reports is able to describe what he encountered, the actions he took and the reasons therefor in a straightforward, thorough manner.  Officer Sutherland is enthusiastic in his desire to develop his skills as an officer and an investigator. His enthusiasm and strong work ethic serve as an example for all members of the department.  His actions reflect credit on himself and the Natick Police Department.

It is my pleasure to formally and publicly commend Officer Jason Sutherland and name him the Natick Police Department Officer of the Year for 2007.
