Police Officer of the Year - 2004
Detective John P. Haswell
Citation to Accompany the AwardIn
recognition of his distinguished performance as Criminal Investigator,
Natick The
increase in the prevalence of and dependence on computers has resulted in
a corresponding increase in criminal activity involving fraudulent use of
this technology. Combining tenacious investigative skills with his
knowledge of contemporary computer crime investigative technology,
Detective Haswell has enabled the Department to investigate and
successfully prosecute crimes committed involving computers. Detective
Haswell has investigated numerous claims of identity theft, fraudulent use
of online auction sites, and e-mailed threats and harassment. In addition
to his department caseload, Detective Haswell also serves as a founding
member of the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council’s Computer Crimes
Division, which provides regional support for those departments that do
not possess the capabilities to adequately investigate these crimes. Prior
to his involvement in computer crime investigations, Detective Haswell had
established himself as a skilled and thorough investigator. His dogged
determination in pursuing a criminal case is best exemplified in his
pursuit of a serial obscene and harassing phone caller. Detective Haswell
began his investigation in 1997 and continued to follow leads and
establish links between victims before identifying and charging the
perpetrator in early 2004. Detective Haswell was lauded as much for his
compassion in dealing with the victims as his investigatory acumen. Finally,
Detective Haswell’s involvement with and knowledge of Detective
Haswell’s outstanding dedication to duty, wide range of investigation
skills, and distinctive accomplishments reflect great credit upon himself
