Police Officer of the Year - 2003

Sergeant Paul W Thompson

For his consistent excellence in police duty throughout the year 2002, Sergeant Paul W. Thompson is hereby named the Natick Police Department Officer of the Year for the year 2003.

In recognition of his distinguished performance as Patrol Supervisor and Area A Commander, Natick Police Department, from January 1, 2002, through December 31, 2002. Utilizing the department’s comparative statistics (CompStat) benchmarking system to measure criminal activity, Sergeant Thompson worked with representatives of Natick’s Area A businesses, particularly the Natick Ma ll manager and his director of security, to significantly reduce the crimes committed throughout his area of responsibility. Under Sergeant Thompson’s command, area residents, businesses, and shoppers benefited from the concerted efforts of Area A patrol personnel to enhance their safety and convenience in traveling from place to place in the very busy shopping corridor comprising that area of Route 9.

Sergeant Thompson also serves as the department’s primary use of deadly force instructor, overseeing firearms training and quarterly qualification, in addition to providing instruction to all department members in the Use of Force policy. Sergeant Thompson’s professional approach to training in this critical area of operations enhances officer safety and officers’ ability to effectively respond to critical incidents. Sergeant Thompson also volunteers as a Citizen Police Academy instructor, providing students with an understanding of the importance of a clearly articulated Use of Force policy and, as an added incentive to academy members, a practical training session in the department firearms range.

Finally, Sergeant Thompson is a leader and member of the department’s Honor Guard, completing a week-long training session conducted at Fort Myer , Virginia by members of the United States Army “Old Guard”, those soldiers responsible for the ceremonial guarding of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery .  Sergeant Thompson and other members of the Honor Guard represent the Natick Police Department at ceremonies in Natick and throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts .

Sergeant Thompson’s outstanding dedication to duty and successful crime prevention strategies reflect the highest credit upon himself and the Natick Police Department. It is my pleasure to formally and publicly commend Sergeant Thompson and name him the Natick Police Department Officer of the Year for 2003.
